Obituary of Alice Slonowski

It is with deep sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Alice Slonowski at the age of 89 on Friday, April 18, 2025 at Henley House, St. Catharines, Ontario.  Alice leaves behind her beloved husband William (Bill) of 66 years, devoted and dearly loved daughters Sandra Smith (Lloyd), Susan Idzenga (Vince) and cherished grandsons Tyler and Logan.

Alice, the youngest of 13 children, was born Olesia Kinaschuk in Ethelbert, Manitoba on October 15, 1935.  As a young woman in the year 1955, she hitched a ride with her best friend Doreen to St. Catharines where she met her future husband Bill, a young man from Garland, Manitoba.  They later married in 1959, making St Catharines their home and where they would raise their family.  Alice’s working life consisted of teaching in rural Manitoba, then on to St. Catharines where she spent many years working at Food City, A&P and Dominion grocery stores.

In her retirement years, she enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching the news to keep up with current events, tuning in to Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and joining her husband in cheering on the NY Yankees and Chicago Black Hawks.  She loved baking and cooking, especially traditional Ukrainian foods.  She also loved spoiling her grandsons with cookies and treats.

Alice will be fondly remembered by her brother-in-law Martin and his wife Nancy, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends she made during her school days in Manitoba, living in the north end of St. Catharines, and working in the grocery store industry.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Rosa and the entire staff in the Woodend wing at Henley House for the wonderful care, patience, respect and compassion they showed Alice while she was a resident for the past five months.
 

Mom, your last years were a struggle and you are no longer suffering. May you rest in peace with the angels.

In accordance with Alice’s wishes there will be no public visitation or service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you create a happy memory with friends or family in honor of Alice.  

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garden City Funerals and Cremations, 39 Court Street, St. Catharines.
