It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mario Vrcek on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, at the age of 60. Though Mario faced many health challenges over the years, his unshakeable resolve and quiet courage were an inspiration to everyone who loved him.

Born in Varazdin, Croatia on June 8, 1964, Mario was the cherished son of Mira Vrcek and the late Antun (“Tony”) Vrcek (2005). He will be forever missed by his brother Kristian (“Kris”) Vrcek, who was blessed to share in Mario’s humor, steadfast loyalty, and endless love of family.

Mario’s kindness reached far beyond his immediate circle. He is mourned by his uncle Mladen Sekelj and cousins Veljko and Sanja Sekelj; by his dear cousin Veljko Dvorski and his wife Marcia—so close to Mario that distance between Winnipeg and Croatia never dimmed their bond; by his aunts and uncles in Croatia—Maria, Vera, Kristina, Josip, Gabrijel, Marijan, and Božidar—and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins across Canada and Croatia. His warm heart, quick wit, and unassuming generosity forged lasting friendships wherever he went.

Whether sharing a round of golf, catching a Saturday-night Canadiens game, or lending a quiet hand when no one else was watching, Mario lived by example: “He didn’t tell us how to live; he lived, and let us watch him do it.” Even in illness, he insisted on hope, reminding us that life’s worth is measured not in years but in the courage and compassion we show one another.

To honour Mario’s memory, the family asks that donations be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Mario’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the physicians, nurses, and PSWs who cared for him with dignity and compassion. We take comfort knowing he left this world peacefully and without pain, surrounded by love, on a day of renewal and promise.
