I overlapped with Martin at the QEII Library in his final few years priors to his retirement. He was such a dedicated collections librarian who worked tirelessly to create the breadth and depth that others marvelled at when they went into the stacks or browsed online. His library legacy remains for all to see and benefit. My condolences to Pam and Family

Sending my sympathy to Martin's family and friends. I got to know Martin a bit after I moved home to work at Memorial University after finishing my PhD on post-conflict Northern Ireland. I was surprised and delighted to discover just how comprehensive a collection of Irish research I now had access to through the QE II library - one of the finest outside of Ireland itself, and a vital support to my work. All of that is thanks to Martin's commitment and intelligence in building those resources. Beyond his enormous contribution to scholarship at Memorial University, Martin was quite simply a lovely person: kind and interested in others. We were all privileged to have him as a colleague, and his work continues to enrich our university.

My condolences to Martin's family and friends. I'm very saddened by this news. Just a wonderful person, and he was very kind to me as a new faculty member back at the turn of the millennium. I have missed him.

Martin and I had many epic battles on the squah courts at Memorial. We played hard and often, but always as gentlemen who much enjoyed the sport. I looked forward to every time we got together, always enjoying his company. In later years I thought of him, especially when a partridge berry chutney recipe he once gave me. came to mind.

Dear Pam,
I was sad to learn of Martin's passing. I have fond memories of working with him. He was always gentle and amiable, with a wonderful understated sense of humour. Martin was a wealth of knowledge. A joke among some of the reference librarians ......
if you can't find the answer in a book, ask Martin.
My sincere condolences.

For many years I worked with Martin acquiring new titles for my department, and always appreciated his quiet humour, expert knowledge, and deep commitment to Memorial University’s library. I also remember feeling how much was lost with his retirement in 2011, but am glad to read, now, that he thoroughly enjoyed it. At this sad time I send on my deepest condolences to his wife and family.

When Martin applied for the position of Humanities Librarian at Memorial, one of his referees stated, “he is very well read but wears his learning lightly.” I do not recall mention of his sense of humor, but with that addition you have the Martin who built Memorial’s collections in the humanities over 35 years. Martin respected books, not just books in general, although there, too, but this book and its place in the discussions that informed the disciplines for which he was responsible and the interests and needs of both faculty and students. As academic libraries change with times, it is unlikely that we will meet his kind again. Ave atque vale.

Pam, My heartfelt condolences to you! Martin was a co-worker in the Collections Development department, and a friend as well. I always think of him as a British gentleman of great learning, with a wonderful sense of humour. His puns were classic, and his performances of Monty Python skits after everyone else had gone home on Friday afternoons were such a delight! I'll miss him, but will especially remember with pleasure our trip to Orkney (with Martin and yourself). Laura Scott

Dear Pam and family,
I'm very sorry to hear about Martin. He was a good colleague, occasional squash partner (to whom I scarcely posed a challenge), and what comes most to mind was the jungle of clutter in his office. Wishing you forbearance and comfort at this difficult time.
Warm wishes,
Aspi

I’m very sorry to hear this sad news, as I recall very warmly my hours spent working closely with Martin in his capacity as humanities librarian, mostly when I was responsible for the library collection in my department's areas of interest. He was someone who cared deeply about books and about learning, and one of the most humane people I’ve met, as well as being extraordinarily helpful to us in building the kind of collection that over the years made the MUN Library the best academic library in the Atlantic Provinces.
