Obituary of Gary Mervin Delamere Lake

Lake, Gary Mervin Delamere – Not without one last joke to put a smile on our face, Gary passed away peacefully in his home on February 3, 2021. Gary attracted the likes of anyone he met – his easy brand of conversation enriched the lives of those around him. Gary was the sole child of Mervin and Mae Lake, born October 19, 1935. After his father’s untimely passing, Gary and his mom spent many years just the two of them. Gary was “one of the boys” at Thompson Products, where he worked for over 45 years. While ultra-persistent was a quality he used sparingly, there’s no doubt Gary used it on the most influential decision of his life – securing a first date with Barbara Elliott. For the next 60 years, Gary and Barb experienced the joys and tribulations of life together. Barb’s passing in 2018 pained Gary dearly, only serving to highlight the enduring love he had for her. Gary had a commanding presence in the lives of his three children, Pam, Heather, and Greg. Between memorable road trips with the Sherlocks, a competitive game of cards, or football in the backyard, the three siblings drew strength and comfort knowing their Dad was always there when it mattered most. Gary’s six grandchildren became used to the feeling of Grandpa’s big hands grabbing their face for a kiss and the constant questions on the dating scene and how their good looks came from him. Gary’s lifelong friends from the South Drive days – you all know who you are – provided unparalleled cheer until the end – and the selfless generosity of his newer friends from Hope Ave provided more peace and comfort than he could have imagined. Gary’s lasting mark on the lives of his children Pam (Ron), Heather (Len), Greg (Cori), grandchildren Philip, Martine, Sarah, Sydney, Maxwell, Connor, and countless special friends will remain forever. Arrangements have been entrusted to Patrick J. Darte Funeral Chapel, 39 Court St., St. Catharines. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment to take place at Victoria Lawn Cemetery at a later date. Those who wish may make a memorial donation to Community Care St. Catharines.
